In 1895, Estelle Arpels, the jewel of the family, married Alfred Van Cleef, the son of a diamond merchant, a marriage that led to the cooperation of the two families and the beginning of the 100-year saga of the jewelry family. In 1906, Alfred Van Cleef, in collaboration with Estelle’s brother, opened the first Van Cleef & Arpels boutique at 22 Place de Fontaine in Paris. One of its first orders was a scale model of the Varuna yacht, a rare piece of craftsmanship with an electric bell for calling the butler.
